2.2.5 Current Practice and Future Perspective of Gifted Education in Slovenia

A brief review with focus on main problems in teaching G&T students in regular classrooms in Slovenia, with basic terminology problems encountered by teachers in the stage of discovering gifted students is analyzed. Further, the results of the research will be presented, which indicate inadequate competences of teachers in identifying and working with gifted and talented students, lower self-assessment skills of teachers in the field of knowledge of personality characteristics and problems in the proper use of teaching strategies. In conclusion, some of the possible system solutions for working with gifted children in the future are described.

Polonca Pangrčič, Ph.D, is teacher in primary school. Her scientific research work comprises predominantly the field of teaching gifted pupils in elementary school. In particular, she deals with gifted and talented students curricular theory as a specific group of pupils within the regular elementary school. She examines the effects of novelties and improvements in individualized programs for gifted pupils in elementary school, which she has designed alone. She also seeks and develops forms of higher-quality teaching of gifted students in elementary schools so that they can develop to their optimum.

Mojca Kukanja Gabrijelčič, Ph.D is an assistant professor at University of Primorska, Faculty of Education, Slovenia. Beside didactics, her research and pedagogical work is aimed at gifted and talented students, identification of gifted students in history; identification of gifted children at preschool education and the development of alternative didactic strategies, enrichment curricula for G&T children/students. Her important contribution in the field of G&T education in Slovenia is in the development of measurement instrument and evaluation scale for discovering gifted students in history lessons. She has also prepared a development an enrichment model and curriculum for gifted students.
