2.2.6 Training Process of Gifted Teachers

This research explored the process for training teachers at a K-12 gifted education school within an underdeveloped country. It is based on the results of a qualitative research project that studied and described the five-year long process of selecting, training, and mentoring the teachers in charge of differentiated programs at a special school for the gifted in Latin America. The study outlined the learning plan and how it is applied towards teachers who are trained in countries where limited economic resources are allotted towards special gifted children centers and where currently no standardized training process has been instituted for them.

Dr. Andrew Almazan directs the Psychology Department at CEDAT-Gifted School. Has worked for 8 years directing the first programs for gifted at Latin America, is responsible for the largest special grouping system for talented at Mexico with over 8,000 students. Currently holds 7 academic degrees: PhD in Education Innovation, Master in Education, Master in Advanced Management by Yale University, Master in Gifted Educational Psychology by University of Connecticut, Master in Business Administration, Bachelor in Psychology and Bachelor in Medicine. His case as former accelerated gifted student at Mexico and current work has been published by several media publications and interviews.

Dafne Almazan is a Professor for gifted students at CEDAT Mexico City and currently student of the PhD in Gifted Education at Liberty University, starting this degree being just 16 years, one of the youngest doctoral students in the US history. Previously she graduated from a Master in Education with major in Teaching Strategies, and a Bachelor in Psychology. In 2016 the Mexican Federation of Psychology gave her the National Award in Psychology, and by August 2018 the local Mexican Government gave her the “Mexico City Youth Award”. She has worked as promoter of Mathematics teaching and STEM at schools.
