24 Place-Based Learning: Acquiring 21st-Century Skills and Increasing Cultural Cognizance Through Travel

In the age of digital learning, GATE Programs must consider what it means to prepare gifted students to not only master the content but to acquire the necessary skills needed for industries not yet created. Equally complicated, teachers and administrators must begin providing authentic opportunities for students to engage different cultures. The goal is to create students who engage the culture through action and reflection thereby creating empathetic and globally minded citizens prepared to interact with the world. This section will teach participants how to construct an immersive travel program that helps facilitate acquisition of 21st Century skills, cultural competency.

1-Examine the research around 21st Century Skills 2-Explore the benefits of increased cultural cognizance 3-Discuss the responsibilities of a global citizenry This session will highlight and focus on the benefits of using travel as a means to teach 21st Century Skills as well as the importance of providing opportunities for students to participate in other culture, both domestic and international. Educators will receive tools and resources to move beyond textbook content and move into more meaningful authentic approaches to prepare our students for an unknown future.
