18 Helping the Gifted Children Solve Practical Problems with Mathematics

Hans Freudenthal, one of the famous mathematicians, emphasizes the importance of realistic Mathematics Education. In his theory, mathematics education must be connected to reality and everyday life. In another word, the objective of mathematics education is to cultivate students’ ability to extract math problems from objective phenomenon. Gifted children are more curious and vigorous than ordinary children. It is teachers’ responsibility to tap those children’s potentials and develop their strengths, so the gifted children can discover and solve problems in everyday life with mathematics. According to the actual situation of the students, this study sets up various mathematics topics, encourages and guides students in a multi-faceted manner, stimulates their interests, and let students solve problems in a proactive and relaxed way.
