4.2.6 Contribution of Parental Style on Critical Thinking and Motivation

Parenting style, critical thinking, and motivation have been considered important factors in learning. The aim of this research is to find out the contributions of parenting style to critical thinking and motivation on fifth-grade gifted students. The instruments used were the Parenting Style Scale (dimensions: Acceptance/Involvement, Psychological Autonomy, Strictness/Supervision), the Cornell Critical Thinking Test Level X (Components: Induction, Deduction, Credibility, Identification of Assumptions) and the Academic Self-Regulation Questionnaire (Styles: External, Introjected, Identified, Intrinsic motivation). In our analysis of the data, the calculation results of arithmetic average, standard deviations, correlations, and the results of regression analysis will be shared and discussed.

I got my bachelor's and master's degrees from Department of Guidance and Psychological Counseling at Marmara University. I have a PhD from Istanbul University in Gifted and Talented Education. While doing my PhD I started to work as a research assistant at Maltepe University with Prof. Dr. Umit Davaslıgil. I finished my PhD in 2013 and I started to work at Istanbul Medipol University in 2016 as an assistant professor in the special education department of the faculty of education. I have just finished Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies training program ceritifed by European Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies.

She received B.S in Psychological Counseling at Ankara University in 1976. She completed her Master's degree in 1981 and Ph.D. in 2011 both at Ankara University. She worked as an Asistant Professor at Maltepe University for 5 years. She is currently working at Istanbul Kultur University. Her fields of interest are gifted education, motivation in gifted students, autonomy, identity development. She is the member of European Assoc. for the Research on Adolescence.

Prof. Dr. Umit Davasligil is the graduate of an American College in Istanbul, which was accredited as a Junior College. She got her license, and PhD degrees in Istanbul University. She is the founder of the Division of Gifted Education for the first time in Turkey in 2002, which initiated a licensed four-year program, a Masters’ program in 2003, and a PhD program in 2006. Her research interests are in creativity and critical thinking in gifted students and early identification of mathematically precocious children. Since 2010, she has been the head of the Department of Special Education at Maltepe University.
