3.2.12 Identifying Gifted English Language Learners

English language students who are advanced and gifted learners are some our most at-risk students. These learners come with unique academic, intellectual, cultural, social, and emotional needs. In this session, participants will learn how a body of evidence is the key to early and accurate identification of students who are talented and gifted from diverse sub-populations. Participants will learn how to use various assessments to identify students from diverse populations. Presenters will also discuss programming strategies for gifted English Language Learners.

Dr. Michelle DuBois is an Instructional Specialist for Gifted Education. She holds a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from Hardin-Simmons University in Texas and a double Masters of Arts in Piano Pedagogy and Piano Performance from the University of Denver in Colorado. Michelle received a Gifted and Talented Endorsement from the University of Denver in 2008. In 2017, Michelle earned a Doctorate of Education in Curriculum and Instruction with a specialization in Gifted Education from the University of Denver. Her passion areas are twice-exceptional learners and bilingually gifted learners.

Dr. Robin Greene is a manager of gifted and talented education in Denver Public Schools. This is her 18th year in education and she holds her doctorate in curriculum and instruction with an emphasis in gifted education. Her passion lies with creating equitable access and opportunities for culturally linguistically diverse gifted learners.
