S3.7.2 Achieving Eminence: What’s Known? What Needs to Be Known? Does it Matter for Our Field?

What aspirations for eminence do we hold for the children, youth, and young adults with whom we work? Should we expect that programs will incorporate insider knowledge to prepare participants who strive towards notable achievements? Should elementary school specialists be familiar with optimal out-of-school programs and reputable secondary schools for domain-talented students? Concurrently, what psychosocial and other skills need to be developed to prepare for the next level of talent development in a domain? Who should be responsible for providing coaching or mentoring for these skills? Finally, how much choice should students have about what domain to pursue?

One of the Center’s missions is to generate public awareness, advocacy, clinical applications, and cutting-edge research ideas that enhance the achievement and performance of children and adolescents with gifts and talents in all domains. Susan J. Paik, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor in the School of Education at Claremont Graduate University. Her research interests include educational productivity, productive giftedness, and talent and leader development. Dr. Paik has presented her work nationally and internationally in over 150 professional venues. She has received several awards, grants, and fellowships including the Early Outreach Award for her dedication to underserved students. She is the editor or author of Advancing Educational Productivity (2005), Educational Productivity in South Korea and the U.S. (2002), Narrowing the Achievement Gap (2007), High-Achieving Latino Students (forthcoming), and Nurturing Productive Giftedness (forthcoming).

Renata Muniz Prado PhD, is a licensed psychologist and professor of School Psychology at University Mauricio de Nassau, Fortaleza, Brazil. She is the founder and responsible for the Gifted and Talent Development research group at the same institution, and coordinates training courses in giftedness for teachers, counselors, and psychologists. She holds a psychoeducational online program for parents of gifted children. During her doctorate studies she was a visiting scholar at Florida State University, supervised by Dr Steven Pfeiffer. Her publication in the field is on female talent development, counseling the gifted, psychosocial variables, gender and creativity, and parenting the gifted.

Dr Leonie Kronborg, is a Senior Lecturer and Co-ordinator of Gifted Education in the Faculty of Education, Monash University, Australia. Her research interests include teacher education, talent development, giftedness and gender. Leonie is a past president of the Australian Association for the Education of Gifted Children. She is Vice President of the World Council for Gifted and Talented Children, Co-Editor of Gifted and Talented International and on the Editorial Boards of Gifted Child Quarterly, Journal for Advanced Academics, and the Australasian Journal of Gifted Education. Leonie gained the Monash University Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence in 2013.

Frank C. Worrell is a Professor at the University of California, Berkeley where he serves as Faculty Director of the School Psychology Program, the Academic Talent Development Program, and the California College Preparatory Academy. His areas of expertise include at-risk youth, cultural identities, scale development, talent development/gifted education, and the translation of psychological research into practice. Dr. Worrell is a Fellow of the American Educational Research Association, the Association for Psychological Science, and the American Psychological Association, and a recipient of National Association for Gifted Children’s Distinguished Scholar Award. He is also a member of the National Academy of Education.

Paula Olszewski-Kubilius is director of the Center for Talent Development at Northwestern University and a professor in the School of Education and Social Policy. Over the past 30 years, she has created programs for gifted learners and written extensively on issues of talent development, particularly on programming for under-represented gifted students. She has served as editor of Gifted Child Quarterly and co-editor of the Journal of Secondary Gifted Education. She is currently vice-chair of the board of trustees of the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy and a member of the board of directors of the Illinois Association for Gifted Children.
