Supporting Gifted LGBTQ+ Students: A Comprehensive School Counseling Approach to Mental Health and Inclusion

The intersection of giftedness with LGBTQ+ identities presents unique challenges, often heightening self-awareness and increasing vulnerability to mental health concerns like depression and anxiety. This presentation will explore best school counseling practices for creating a safe and inclusive educational climate, implementing evidence-based interventions, and fostering a culture of acceptance and respect. Key strategies include establishing inclusive policies, providing staff training on LGBTQ+ issues and giftedness, and utilizing therapeutic approaches like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). By prioritizing these strategies, school counselors can empower students to thrive academically, socially and emotionally, promoting long-term success and resilience.
