Triarchic Theory: Putting It to Work in the Classroom

Are you seeking a new approach to math differentiation? This session will explore applying Sternberg's Triarchic Theory of Intelligence (analytical, creative, and practical) within the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) framework. It addresses the need for differentiated instruction for gifted and talented learners in a cluster classroom by offering educators practical strategies. This research based theory is put to practice by use of a graphic organizer designed to facilitate lesson planning based on the three intelligences. Five concrete steps for implementation within the classroom are: (1) identify CCSS learning standard, (2) select one or all intelligences that need to be assessed design activities targeting each intelligence, (3) select a verb to implement differentiated instruction, (4) select a product outcome, and (5) assess student learning using one point rubric. This approach aims to enhance student engagement and promote deeper understanding of CCSS content.
