The Journey of Twice-Exceptional Families: An Exploratory Mixed Methods Research
Little is known about how parents of twice-exceptional children become aware of their children's exceptionalities and how this knowledge is factored in the decision-making process about them. This study aimed to elicit mothers’ lived experiences of twice-exceptional children during their child's journey; identify the barriers to the accepted participation of parents in the decision-making process, and finally, collect families’ recommendations for potential interventions in the timely assessment and support of their child. This research followed the patient-partner model. The significance of the project is to integrate parental knowledge in the delivery of care and education to best benefit twice-exceptional children.
