Equity and Domains of Giftedness: NSW’s High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) Policy in Practice

The NSW Department of Education’s (DOE) HPGE Policy redefines gifted education by promoting equity and recognising the interconnected domains of potential—creative, intellectual, physical, and social-emotional. Grounded in research, the policy supports diverse learners, including those from disadvantaged, Aboriginal, and culturally diverse backgrounds. The policy is system-wide and flexible for adaptation to school and community contexts served by the NSW Department of Education. Implementation tools, including the Evaluation and Planning Tool, enables schools to assess and refine their procedures, programs, and practices. This presentation shares insights from NSW’s innovative approach to HPGE with a scalable, research-based framework for inclusive gifted education.
