Evaluation of G&T Through Cognitive and Project-Based Learning Activities
The identification of gifted and talented (G&T) students varies across countries. In Italy, standardized cognitive tests, such as WISC scales, are widely used, with IQ or GAI scores playing a key role in determining eligibility for special programs. However, these metrics alone may not fully capture a student's potential. Our pilot research integrates cognitive evaluation with project-based, hands-on activities across STEAM fields (e.g., Chemistry, Computer Science, Architecture, AI, 3D Printing). Students aged 12–15 engage in interdisciplinary tasks, measuring their ability to rapidly learn and apply concepts. Dependent variables include task completion time, accuracy, engagement, and creative problem-solving. Preliminary results suggest this method fosters creativity, problem-solving skills, and engagement while helping students identify their interests. The project also emphasizes public speaking and dissemination skills for older participants. By incorporating cognitive and practical evaluations, this approach provides a holistic framework for identifying and nurturing G&T students in diverse domains.
