Profoundly Gifted, Significantly Underserved -- Using Research and Best Practice to Address this Inequity for our Very Brightest Learners

Students who achieve IQ scores more than three standard deviations above the mean are classified as Profoundly Gifted (PG). These exceptional individuals comprise only 0.13% of the population, with IQ scores ranging from 145 to 160 and higher. Studies of profoundly gifted learners suggest they differ significantly from highly gifted students due to differently wired neurons that allow more complex and efficient neural highways for transmitting information. They also have different value structures.

The PGs' extraordinary cognitive abilities set them apart from their peers and necessitate tailored educational and mental-health approaches to maximize their potential. They process information more rapidly and with greater complexity; thus, specialized teaching and social-emotional strategies are required. Learn how to implement the "Integral Practice for the Gifted" (IPG) model in the school setting and mental-health spaces. IPG uses clinical and educational research, neurobiological data, and differentiated educational practices to enable profoundly gifted learners to flourish.
