Acceleration is a Process, Not an Event: Supporting Students Post-Acceleration

Acceleration consists of three phases: decision-making, the ‘event’, and ongoing monitoring and support. This presentation shares an Australian study examining parental perceptions of the third phase of acceleration as experienced by whole-grade accelerated children. Using Grounded Theory methodology, the “Championing Grade Acceleration” model was developed, identifying teacher training in gifted education as the central phenomenon and key to the success of acceleration. Findings of this study reveal the often-challenging experiences of whole-grade accelerated students and their families. The presentation shares insights, methodology, and a framework of recommended educator actions to enhance support and ensure long-term success for whole-grade accelerated students.
