Understanding Anxiety: Neurobiology, Manifestations, and Solutions for Gifted Learners
Gifted learners often experience heightened cognitive and sensory processing, which can cause intense and prolonged reactions to various stimuli, making them more susceptible to anxiety. When anxiety is repeatedly triggered, becomes overwhelming, or arises without an apparent cause, it may develop into an anxiety disorder. We will explore the neurobiology of anxiety in gifted learners and its various manifestations. These include anxiety stemming from environmental stressors, heightened bodily awareness, deep introspection, inadequate academic programming and opportunities, social pressures (such as those from social media), and existential concerns. We will discuss strategies for recognizing and intervening in these situations, including mindfulness practices, cognitive-behavioural techniques, and self-regulation methods, all of which aim to support the well-being and success of gifted learners.
