Underachievement of Gifted Female Students from Economically Disadvantaged Backgrounds

Underachievement of gifted female students is difficult to detect and easily overlooked, which could eventually develop into social-emotional issues among these students and negatively impact their academic and personal lives. This study focuses on examining the academic underachievement of gifted female students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds through a qualitative approach. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with three parents and two gifted female students who had attended a summer camp at a public university in the USA. This study serves as a precursor for future research on developing strategies to mitigate and reverse underachievement of gifted female students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds
