Teachers’ Perceptions of Characteristics and Conditions of Successful Professionalization Regarding Gifted Education in The Netherlands

Teachers significantly influence student outcomes and wellbeing. For gifted students, enhancing teacher quality through professional development is crucial, as many teachers feel insecure in this area. We interviewed 28 teachers to identify key characteristics and conditions for successful professional development. Teachers noted that these factors vary with contexts and differ in participation versus impact. Providing knowledge with practical applications was frequently cited as essential. Successful school conditions included a shared vision, policy integration of giftedness, an open culture, and supportive management. Barriers included time/money/teacher-shortages, and resistance to change. Intrinsic motivation was a key incentive for professionalization. Practical implications are presented.
