5.1.1 Accomplished Teaching Strategies that Work!

Differentiating for gifted students can present a challenge for a general and gifted education teacher. The aim of this session is to provide participants with accomplished teaching strategies that will support growth for all learners. To provide a foundation for participants, examples of accomplished teaching practices will be shared and expanded upon by participants. Next, a video clip analysis of an accomplished teacher will focus on elements of the lesson utilizing a viewing guide centered around the Five Core Propositions of National Board Certification. We will promote a shift in professional development to strategy development for teachers to refine their craft and meet the needs of diverse learners through building culture. The primary strategy addressed will be higher level questioning based on research conducted by John Hattie, Jackie Walsh, and Norman Webb, as well as accomplished teaching practices based on National Board for Professional Teaching Standards’ Five Core Propositions. By providing professional development that promotes accomplished teaching strategies, educators will lead students to a higher level of thinking, as well as insert the process of reflection into their practice for the purpose of improving teaching quality. Through an exploration of what good teaching looks like, participants will be led to an analysis of a video of a teacher who demonstrates the qualities of an accomplished educator. Following the video, participants will identify the problem of practice in the classroom and develop strategies to address and solve the issue through strategies that promote accomplished teaching. Participants will leave the session with a focus on inward reflection to better their craft and strategies to apply in their classroom to differentiate learning activities.
