2.7.2 Identifying Talent Across Contexts using the TABs (Traits, Aptitudes and Behaviors)

Giftedness is a psychological construct that cannot be directly measured. We are able to infer giftedness by observing certain characteristics or behaviors of individuals (Hagen, 1980). The TABs (Traits, Aptitudes and Behaviors) instrument represents the basic characteristics of giftedness that can be recognized within and across a variety of economic, cultural and linguistic groups. While the original instrument sets a foundation for what giftedness looks like in ten core attributes; users can also apply a variety of “frames” or “lenses” to the basic characteristics and what they might look like in a particular subject area or group of students. For example, to select high ability students for a talent development program in mathematics, teachers might utilize a TABs instrument that has research-based, math traits, aptitudes and behaviors integrated into the ten core attribute areas. This session highlights the TABs (Traits, Aptitudes and Behaviors) instrument and its versatility and flexibility in designing talent development opportunities for students from diverse populations. Presenters will give a brief overview of the TABs (Traits, Aptitudes and Behaviors) instrument and its core attributes, as well as, share exemplars of the instrument and how it was used in a variety of settings. Participants will be able to examine TABs examples and evaluate for effectiveness. Likewise, participants will begin to propose ideas about how they might use the TABs instrument in their setting for a variety of purposes. This session provides practical application of a research-based instrument to promote equity and excellence in talent development programs and services.
