3.3.11 Addressing Suicide in Gifted Youth: Educator Response to Existential Crisis

While the research specifically on giftedness vis-a-vis suicide is sparse and consists primarily of psychological autopsies, the research into causes of suicide and effective suicide prevention practices is robust. As suicide becomes a greater threat to gifted youth, educator response becomes a critical component in prevention.

In this session, a therapist specializing in the gifted and a gifted expert who is a certified school administrator construct a creative and practical system of response for schools that addresses the oft-conflicting needs of communities and campuses.

Specific, research-based practices are shared, and a series of videos is made available to participants to explore and share.

This session targets specific behaviors, explores the reasons gifted youth are at risk, reveals how schools can stop suicide contagion, and shares free resources any campus can begin to use immediately.

Particularly geared to campus-based practitioners, this session offers an opportunity for educators to engage in the conference as scholars.
