4.5.3 Underachievement Amongst Gifted Students: How to Diagnose and Treat It
This session would begin looking at the alarming statistics concerning underachieving gifted students including:
- Speculation is that anywhere from 10 to 50% of gifted students suffer from underachievement
- 25% of females could be considered underachieving while 50% of males
- 18-25% of students who drop out of high school have been identified as gifted
We would look at further research concerning college success and long-term life success of underachievers.
After this we would look at the ten most common reasons gifted students underachieve:
1. Boredom
2. Social/Emotional Needs
3. Peers (peermates vs. agemates)
4. Home life
5. Twice exceptional
6. Lack of intrinsic motivation
7. Lack of skills
8. Lack of programming/Trained teachers
9. Not challenged
10. Too smart for their own good
Included would be how to look for these symptoms and strategies for reversing the underachievement caused by them. We would then revisit the profiles and reveal who they are and how they were able to overcome their underachievement.
