4.9.1 Escape The Classroom

The way that modern education is set up, the brightest and the best are often left unchallenged and unprepared for life beyond the classroom. The current educational system does not encourage students to encounter situations in which they may fail forward and learn from their mistakes. There are rare opportunities provided for these pupils that allow for collective inquiry, creativity, and communication while problem solving real-world concerns.

Through the power of play, educators will learn to provide standards-based challenges in a variety of content areas and for a variety of grade level spans. These challenges require students to use clues, both online and placed around the classroom, to activate their prior knowledge, explore new content through research, collaborate with other students, and think critically, in order to fix misconceptions and revise thinking.

During this session, participants will learn to transform their classroom into an academic “escape room.” Using clues, hints, and strategies, participants will be challenged to solve a series of puzzles and riddles in a race against the clock to “escape the classroom.” This session brings the "4 Big C's" of gifted education together in an immersive, multi-platform way by encouraging collaboration, critical thinking, creativity, and communication.
