Proposal-Presentation of findings from an unpublished dissertation investigating the social competency of students with high intelligence, specifically through the lens of social pragmatic skills. This study builds on earlier research by affirming a negative relationship between high intelligence and psychopathology and poor social competence, yet goes beyond mere quantifications of clinical traits to investigate association between subtle social communication skills and competence. This becomes particularly important for understanding the clinical needs and developmental progression of social skills for students with high intelligence. Multi-source indices of social competence, clinical pathology and pragmatic language were gathered on a sample of 79 children, aged 7-10 years with IQ scores above 130 on the WISC-IV. Expanding on this research and drawing from 15 years of clinical practice, these findings will be discussed, especially as they pertain to the addition of “Social Pragmatic Communication Disorder" in the DSM-V. Panel discussion will address the clinical implications of looking at social pragmatics for understanding and intervening with students with high intelligence. Additional discussion pertaining to future research and implications for probable interventions.
