3.8.9 Mathematics Talent Search: Differences in Mathematical Giftedness in Girls and Boys

The „talent search mathematics“ is used to give 6th graders the possibility to qualify themselves for the participation in a foster program which is called „The Hamburg Model“. Therefore two measurements were assessed, the German version of the Scholastic Aptitude Tests for mathematics (GSAT-M), to assess knowledge in mathematics and the Hamburger Test für mathematische Begabung (HTMB, test for mathematically giftedness, particularly mathematical creativity). In the recent study the data of the participants of the talent searches from the years 2003-2006 were analyzed. Using the results of the best 25% (N = 592), we found significant differences in gender in both assessments. Moreover there was found a significant interaction between gender and kind of test. Girls achieved a higher score in HTMB and boys a higher Score in GSAT-M. Possible causes and implications will be discussed.
