3.9.4 How is Need for Cognition Related to School Achievement in Particularly Talented Young People?

The „talent search mathematics“ is used to give 6th graders the possibility to qualify themselves for the participation in a foster program which is called „The Hamburg Model“. Therefore two measurements were assessed, the German version of the Scholastic Aptitude Tests for mathematics (GSAT-M), to assess knowledge in mathematics and the Hamburger Test für mathematische Begabung (HTMB, test for mathematically giftedness, particularly mathematical creativity). In the recent study the data of the participants of the talent searches from the years 2016 and 2017 (N = 291) and additionally one sample of participants of the promotion program in 2016 (N = 63) were analyzed. Therefore the relationship between NFC, mathematical performance and school grades was explored. There were low positive correlations found between NFC and school grades as well as the scores in the talents search. The results also implicate that NFC is a better predictor for academically achievement in participants of the talent search than in high ability students.
