4.2.9 Supporting the Emotional Needs of Gifted Students and Parents in Title I Schools

The purpose of this pilot program was to provide the Supporting Emotional Needs Group model for underserved populations of parents in Title I schools and former Title I schools. It was hypothesized that this intervention would provide parents with tools to help them with the implementation of better parenting skills while building authentic relationships with the school staff. First, we created a principal’s memo and distributed it to all the Emerging Scholars Initiative Schools. We created an electronic registration form. Upon completion of each form, we called each parent and explained the six-week commitment. After the six-week commitment to the parents, they received a schedule and books for the parent group. Then, we met weekly for six weeks and implemented the model. The parents continued to participate in the book study and share anecdotal information about their children. In the end, the parents decided to create an end of the session celebration. They planned everything and provided food for all of us.
