4.1.9 Finding Our Fractaled Children: Lessons Learned From Fractals in Nature: Casting A Wider Net

Twice-exceptional students often struggle in school because they have never been identified, or they are not receiving services for their gifted exceptionality in tandem with their other exceptionality, e.g. ADHD, SLD, Autism, OHI, ED, etc. Are the experiences of 2e students improved through appropriate identification early on, with the addition of gifted or disability services which include accommodations and/or modifications? 2e students are not being identified consistently, and when they are identified, it is usually for gifted services or disability services, not a combination of both. Are current teacher education and professional development practices consistently training professionals to find the fractaled children who are being missed? What other fractaled children are "hiding" in plain sight? Participants will examine how school districts can began to look for 2e children previously missed through traditional identification methods, and participants will discuss and learn how fractaled students can be recognized, supported, and valued by the school staff who work with them every day. In addition, we will discuss which other fractaled children are waiting for school personnel to discover them.
