4.2.7 A Study of the Profile of Brazilian Families with Gifted Children

Although there is an increase in the number of research aimed at giftedness in the past 40 years, research on the family with gifted children still presents shy. The literature review revealed that there is a shortage of studies that involve the family of the gifted and their dynamics as the main object, which demonstrates the need for research aimed at the family of the gifted, particularly the Brazilian one. In this sense, the purpose of this study was to delinete the profile of Brazilian families with gifted children. This research had a descriptive delineation, with quantitative and qualitative procedures. Participated of the study 140 families with gifted child (ren) distributed in all 18 units of Brazil. For the data collection, a Questionnaire of Characterization of the Family System was adapted to the purpose of the study and the digital format (online), being hosted on the Survio Platform. The closed questions of the questionnaires were analyzed using quantitative descriptive statistics and the open questions by Bardin's Content Analysis. The results indicated that the families had predominantly nuclear configuration, formed by father, mother and child and in some cases with the presence of one of the grandparents, who made up the family support network. There was greater participation of mothers, corroborating the literature on the responsiveness maternal The data showed that the families had high level of schooling, high socioeconomic level, as well as a stimulating and rich environment in terms of parental educational practices. The results indicated that families, from the identification of their children as gifted, altered their dynamics in order to activities to the demands of the gifted child. For the implementation of the research highlights some challenges related to the wide extension of the territory national level and the lack of promotion for research of a more census type in our country. As implications for future research, it is suggested that studies with socioeconomically disadvantaged families.
