4.1.4 Collaborative Songwriting as an Educational Activity for the Gifted Learner

A blank page is filled with infinite possibilities.

Students are capable of writing songs and gifted students often excel. Songwriting as a creative project allows for much freedom: tempo, genre, feel and lyrics, which are all secondary to the experience of uniting our voices to say something together. Songwriting is about story and encouraging students to unlock and improve their ability to tell a story, through the literary constraints of a song, including editing to say it as well as it can possibly be said. Collaborative songwriting draws on multiple learning skill sets: critical thinking, creativity, storytelling, the blending of multiple disciplines, marrying fiction and nonfiction, problem solving, and collaboration. Students additionally benefit from performing their songs and listening to classmates in a trust filled environment.

In this session - the leader will give tips for the best teaching/coaching of students in an effort to facilitate a fun and successful classroom learning activity. She brings with her unique experiences as a songwriter and performer.
