3.5.13 Research and Teaching Practice of the Original English Book Instruction for the Intellectually Gifted Children

Gifted Children have a strong intellectual curiosity and their learning needs cannot be met by traditional English teaching. Original English books, which demonstrate the outstanding achievement of western world in humanity and science, are able to arouse the gifted children’s enthusiasm in English learning. In recent years, many teachers in Chinese elementary and middle schools have attempted to adopt original English books in their classroom. However, some limitations still exist in the process of teaching original English books. The current study, therefore, aims to do some research in the following aspects: 1. Enrich the variety of reading materials, not restricted to literature only; 2. Apart from the in-class original English book instruction, offer students scientific reading guidance for students’ after-class reading; 3. Evaluate the teaching effect under the theoretical framework of English reading literacy. As a result, the current study is hoped to develop an original English book instruction curriculum for the intellectually gifted children at a well-known secondary school in Beijing, China, which will be able to enhance students’ English reading literacy.
