4.7.9 Igniting Mathematical Minds: Rigorous Questioning Using the Icons of Depth and Complexity

In this session, participants learn instructional strategies to develop rigorous math questions. Participants will evaluate the level of complexity of a math task using a provided checklist. Presenters will model how to increase depth and complexity by introducing Sandra Kaplan’s Icons of Depth and Complexity. In addition, presenters will model how the icons or combination of icons can be used to add rigor to any math task as a way to meet the needs of gifted math learners. When used intentionally in the classroom, these strategies encourage student discourse, provide challenge, extend thinking, and provide a platform for students to take academic risk while have their unique needs met. Resources shared during this session can be immediately utilized as tools for professional development, collaborative planning, and classroom instruction.
